There were several, but they were all in different times.
George Mikan - the original big man in the middle.
Wilt Chamberlain - the NBA changed lots of rules just to try to stop him. Kareem couldn't hold his jock strap in his prime. Overshadowed by Bill Russel's Celtics teams.
Oscar Robertson - would be far and away the career assists leader, if they called them the way they do now. When he played, an assist was given only if you passed another player the ball and the player scored without dribbling the ball. If he dribbled - no assist was given. Now, a player can pass another player the ball, and if the player scores an assist is given.
Magic Johnson - need anyone say more.
Michael Jordan - again, see above.
Shaq, Kobe, D-Wade - all have the potential to be there.
Of all time, though, I go with Wilt.
The only man to score 100. Still holds 46 NBA all-time records and 25 regular season records. He also won seven scoring, nine field goal percentage, and eleven rebounding titles, and once even led the league in assists. Name another center to come close to leading in assists?

This is a no brainer question...and I've already answered it a million times on Answers...MICHAEL JORDAN...Let me say it again, Michael Jordan...No, its not Kobe or Dwayne and CERTAINLY not Mr. 0 championships LeBron...It is Jordan...6 championships...end of story...People talk about Bill Russell winning a lot more (and, I'm a Celtic fan for the record) but the game was a lot slower and less athletic back in the 50s and 60s...Michael Jordan absolutely revolutionized the game...and Jordan is the standard that great players look up to...They don't say they want to be as good as Bird, Russell, or Havlicheck...They don't bring Kobe, Magic, or Wilt into the conversation...It is Jordan...and to the LeBron bandwagon, I just have one thing to say...6 NBA Championships to NONE...

Oscar Robertson easily had the best all-around game and I consider him to be the best ever even over Jordan. He was a triple threat who could score inside, outside and also was a stellar play-maker. This man is the only player in the history of the NBA to average a triple-double for a whole SEASON! If he played in today's game he would still dominate. His career averages were 25.7 PPG, 7.5 REB, and 9.5 AST. They didn't even start counting blocks and steals until his last season so who knows how many of those he had.

Jordan never played on a winning team in the NBA without Scottie Pippen.
He played 15 seasons and was on 5 losing teams, corresponding to his years without Pippen as a teammate.
He was 1-9 in the playoffs without Scottie Pippen as a teammate, and NEVER MADE IT OUT OF THE FIRST ROUND - can you say Tracy McGrady?
Pippen led the Bulls to the 2nd round of the playoffs in the first year of Michael's retirement.
Michael retires and the Bulls drop from 57 wins to 55!!
How does any of this make Jordan the greatest player of all time??
As another great answerer on Yahoo Answers said, without Scottie Pippen, Jordan was nothing more than a bald-headed Dominique Wilkins.
Only casual fans who don't know the history of the NBA say they want to "be like Mike"...but even when he was the best player on his college team, he couldn't make it to the final four, let alone win a title.
Jordan needed Pippen. Desperately! And history doesn't lie. He couldn't win without him!

It is obviously Michael Jordan. Look at his stats. He played with the flu. How many people have done that? Not many, if any, except Jordan.
