The invention of the printing press. It opened the world of ideas and opinions to millions. It encouraged people to read themselves instead of standing around one person listening. It broadened educational opportunities for the masses.

Keeping our civilization from getting wiped out by a catastrophic event. This hasn't actually happened yet, but it'll distinguish us humans from everything else that used to live on Earth. Once we are able to prevent a stray NEO from whacking a big crater into our crust and wiping out our civilization, we'll be a step ahead of everything else that has gotten wiped out before they were able to advance any further.
