You know, I hear wierd stuff like this about school discipline all the time; I often wonder if it happens or is just bunk. What did she get in trouble for in Science? Was this a factor in her suspention?
If this is the case and your friend did back flips and got 20 days; what does a person get for breaking a real damaging rule at your school, do they line them up against the wall? If your friend was told to sit down, read a book and then did back flips, she was guilty of insubordination (not doing what she was told) and that is maybe reason for days off, but hardly 20 days....maybe 3.
Good discipline is based on progressive discipline; small infractions mean small punishments; the idea is that "fair is fair"; if your school did this act, they paint themselves into a corner when serious stuff happens, like litigation as they cannot defend themselves for such punishments.
Imagine if a student purposely broke a school window and got 3 days suspention and they were, say "white", anglo, could a black student not slam the school administration with a discriminatory suit fo suspending her for 20 days for backflips?
This may not have happened at your school, but your school needs to be aware of setting themselves up for a fall; yes, they should be "fair", but schools, like any entitiy, think in money terms, what they have to loose if they loose...sad deal.
What does your student union say about this? Unfair???? or Fair? Or does your school administration fail to recognize the student union???

I do not believe suspension was a good choice in this matter. Maybe after school detention. This is not putting her education 1st and teachers are just being to irresponsible in punishments these days. She is old enough to know better.. but the suspension should be brought to the school board. I know if it were my child I would be appealing it. 20 days is not acceptable. Detention or holding her from Cheering a few games would be a better option.
Suspensions should be used for fighting or threatening others.

Well besides the fact that she was told to SIT in the hallway, besides the fact that she had already disobeyed. Then she does something stupid like that in a hallway, where there is no padding if she was to slip and fall, noone around if there was a problem. She could have broken her neck, been paralized or hit someone as the came around a corner or out of a door. Then her parents could have sued the school because of her stupidity. Maybe 20 days is a little much, but eventually kids have to learn that they are not invinsible and when they are told to do something they need to DO IT!!!

Umm no...I dont really think its fair to give her that many days. thats rediculous! My brother did a hand stand in the middle of class adn eh didnt get in trouble or anything. I think that they should have talkd to her and explained to her she cant do handsprings in the hall and maybe give her detention but I think suspension for like 20 days is way over the top! :)

Well honestly she could have hurt herself or another person perhaps even a teacher. It seems a little overbored to me but on the other hand if shes a cheerleaser maybe they are trying to make an example out of her wich sucks but hey thats life for ya! I mean considering its just high school it could be worse. You cant just get bored and deceide to do crazy things when your at work or in a seriouse sitiuation.

They're not going to suspend you for 20 days minimum for doing gymnastics in the hall. You might not know the whole story, there may have been other instances that led up to this.

Wow..and I thought it was pathetic that i got a detention(gotta go tomorrow, urgh!) because my boyfriend kissed me on the cheek, by the stairs, after the school bell rang to go home... Now, it depends, I don't think punishment should be that..nicely put harsh. I mean, over a backhandspring!!? Was she suppose to be doing homework...please fill me in, because i wanna make fun of that school...no offense..but that is PATHETIC!! the administrators, not the school...I could seriously understand an Aschool, or detention, but that's crazy.

Yes, it's sounds stupid and over-kill, unless what she did in class was enough to justify suspending her in the first place. Some administrators are just trigger-happy, but I suspect there's more to the story than this.
