Wired didn't mention any of the interesting stuff.

The core is more solid like than liquid due to the pressure of material above it pressing down. The heat below the crust is thought to be left over from the original material collapsing that formed the earth, and partly from the decay radioactive isotopes of lighter materials like potassium that keep the earth geologically active.

The most recent theoretical paper I've seen suggests that heavy isotopes of uranium form a kind of natural fission reactor at the center of the iron core.

The core also rotates faster than the rest of the earth. Possibly because the moon is slowing down the rotation of the earth via tidal forces that affect the mantle more than the core. The process also causes the moon to slowly drift farther away.
