The wheel.Since the wheel was invented, no-one has come up with a better idea. The wheel is still very much in use today, for travel. Aeroplanes, which take travellers hundreds of miles have wheels. All vehicles, have wheels which help in taking us to far off places. In very early times, our ancestors had to walk great distances, in order to get to their destinations. Then, they travelled along rivers; then some-one thought of the wheel, as a good idea of getting people from one location to the next, more easily, and more quickly ; they attached the wheel to a cart, and animal[ donkey, mule, horse] . As the years progressed the wheel was improved, and the wheel is still here with us, on cars, trucks, etc. No-one has come up with a better idea since then , for getting human traffic, over wide and far areas.

The printing press. It led to massive changes in many aspects of society. It changed the way the world thought about information. When books had to be copied by hand, they were astronomically expensive, and the control of knowledge and information tended to stay with the wealthy and large and powerful institutions like the church. Once it was possible to make large quantities of books quickly and less expensively, that started to change.
The printing press was a huge factor in the Protestant Reformation. It also lead to the widespread use of vernacular languages and the corresponding decline of Latin, not to mention an enormous increase in literacy.

Internet
Biro
Penicillin
Washing Machines
Fridge
Microwave
Cars
The list is endless...anything that makes life easier or improves the quality of life has to be a great invention.
I'd give them all up for a great pair of Levis Jeans though.

Radio. Was going to say Internet, but even people without access to PCs have radio. Because it links communities, & fosters democracy.
