Not everyone who is homeless is that way because of addiction, laziness, etc... While it may be a small section, some are there through no fault of their own. For example, what about a 18 year old girl who has spent their entire life moving from one foster home to another, never having the chance to learn the most basic life skills, those skills that the majority of us take for granted. Should we help her? How about the family where the parents lost their jobs, their savings, and eventually their house, do they not deserve our help? While there are those who can help themselves and chose not to, there are always exceptions to the rule.

Why? Why shouldn't we? It is a perfectly great way to improve your Karma. That is if you need a reason that's purely self-serving. Otherwise, it is simply nice to offer kindness to those less fortunate. So what if you went to school and hold down a job. You'd be surprised how many homeless people were once "Regular People" too.

There are many reasons people are homeless. Some due to illness, some addictions, some families, some working homeless. Should we help them. Yes, but each one is different with different needs. I was watching the news, the very cold nights they were missing a man from the homeless shelter. However, they found him, he was at work. Everything has become so expensive, that a lot of people are one paycheck away from being homeless. Truly sad, but wouldn't you want someone to help you during an unfortunate reality?

Yes, I think we should help the homeless. However, I think it should be done by supporting those institutions who are set up to provide the best care, such as the Goodwill or the Salvation Army. They provide food, warm shelter and clothing directly to those individuals and families who really need and want them. They are professionals who know how best to help people.

I don't believe was should give out cash on the street to homeless. Not only is it dangerous, I'm afraid they're going to spend the money on something other than food, namely drugs. In that case, I don't want my hard earned money supporting someone else's habit.

It's been said that you can judge a society by its prisons. I suppose someone could also say a society should be judged by how it helps those who are homeless and impoverished. Some people's situations are bad because of circumstances, and some have bad situations by "choice". The question is, how should they be helped?

I would suggest a "help yourself" attitude and give them the tools / training to help those who really want to. The reality is, many don't want any help. They want more of the addicting chemicals that soothe their tattered souls. So be it.

There are people working who still can't afford rent. Our biggest
problem right now are the CEO's who are raking in million
dollar pensions, who aren't paying a livable wage to these
hard working people.

We already help the homeless through the taxes we pay. Unemployment benefits, food stamps, shelters, private churches, and so on. The real question today is should we (and how can we) help the mentally ill.

Hell no. I know too many "homeless" that have bigger bank accounts than I'll ever have. They just like being homeless.

We must help the poor no matter what. It is Christian duty to help the poor.

Unlike the first self-righteous answerer, we must not question why poor people are poor. We have a duty to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and shelter the homeless.

of course we should help the homeless. We should want to help the homeless. Its our responsibility as americans and moral people to help the less fortunate and to help our fellow americans in any way that we can.
