If you are an american citizen traveling by foot or car or boat, then all you need is a photo id to get back through the border.

If you are traveling by plane (american or not) and traveling from the US to Mexico and then back to the US, you need a valid passport.

If you are residing in the US you need a passport, if you are Canadian, you need Photo ID and proof of citizenship or passport

For up to date info always check with your Local consulate for the country you are visiting.

last I heard, if you're from the US you can still go and come back with your Photo ID, the passport thing is still only for people traveling through airplane. But you may want to take it just to be sure.
