Some people tell great stories.. others are terrible. When telling a good story.. do you need to follow similar guidelines to a joke, or maybe a novel? If anyone knows... or knows of any books, websites etc., I'd appreciate it.

besides having a good story to tell .. You need to work on the same skills that any public speaker uses to captivate an audience.
skills like, eye contact, body language, gestures, vocal variety

There is a world wide organization (club) Called toastmasters
it is for people who want to improve their public speaking skills.
they may have a chapter near you and many of the individuals that belong to toastmasters have websites with helpful hints for speakers.

It depends on your audience. If you can, make it personal to who you are telling the story to - or at least include something with which they can identify with or relate to.
