What is the difference between a social conservative and a regular conservative?

2007-02-26 09:17:35 · 8 answers · asked by Linus 2 in Politics & Government Politics

I mean, specifically? Is a social conservative just the "moral" side?

A social conservative believes in implementing policy that changes the moral structure of society. Examples of this would be repealing abortion laws, stiffer drug penalties, allowing prayer in school, and teaching evolution to children in school.

A regular conservative believes that the government needs to be less intrusive in people lives and tries to implement policy that changes the powers of government. Examples of this would be lowering taxes, easier gun laws, and lowering spending in government.

Sounds like an oxymoron...

Social vs. Other Conservatisms
There is no necessary link between Social and Economic or Fiscal Conservatism. In fact, some Social Conservatives are otherwise apolitical or even left-wing on fiscal issues. For example, Social Conservatives may also support a degree of government intervention in economic life for what they feel is to the benefit of the community, and as such will tend to support the concept of a social market economy to further this aim. This concern for material welfare, like advocacy of traditional mores, will often have a basis in the religion of the Social Conservatives in question. Examples of such Social Conservatives include the Christian Social Union of Bavaria, the Family First and Democratic Labor Party of Australia, the so-called red tory movement in Canada, and possibly the Communitarian movement in the United States.

a social conservative swings on the pendulum for sevicing the needs at the time it is deemed a need and this is because of demand and supply on a buisness level that the govn't is a huge part of and this regulation based on supply and demand has to focus on the needs of the people to keep the economy in a circular growth that still focuses on right wing agendas.even liberals have to swing in order to keep the supply and demand in context...corperations feel that gov't should stick to governing and stop changing policies that distract right wing action ,,,kapeish?

Social conservatives are not only economic conservatives,as you seem to suggest in 'Additional Details'.

I think you mean a 'fiscal' conservative. I happen to be both.

A fiscal conservative does not believe in high taxes or lots of government spending. We should operate within our means. That's the 'money' side of things.

This is where a lot of conservatives differ. IMO, true conservatives are at the very least fiscal conservatives. This is not where Bush is percieved today.

Social conservatives are liberals, in my opinion, who are against abortion and gay rights. They pretty much don't give a hoot if they bring the country to the brink of fiscal disaster, e.g. Bush.
