>>I just don't understand the logic behind it.

Well, you just said it. Conservatives aren't logical. They become conservative because they are either greedy, selfish, ignorant, arrogant, and very insecure. Their ideology isn't based on logic, it's based on fear.
Carol F: Our country was not founded on Christian beliefs. The founders of our country were atheists, agnostics, Deists and some Christians. And, even the Christians of that time period believed in the ideas and ideals of the Enlightenment. They purposely left out religion and God out of the Constitution because it was something they wanted to keep separate from government. They fled from this system in Europe why would they want to repeat it in America?

Logic is exactly why I am a conservative.
I'm a conservative because I know that our country faces pure evil in islamofascism. I understand that the ideology behind it has nothing to do with poverty or the big-bad USA. Islamofascists are commanded to kill infidels by their holy book. I understand that if we don't fight this war now, and instead put it off, our grandchildren will be fighting it against an enemy made stronger by sheer numbers. The reproductive and immigration math assures us that Europe will eventually be a majority muslim territory, and Canada, on our northern border is headed that way too.
I'm a conservative because I understand the inherent flaws in any type of socialist theory. People are by nature motivated by personal desires, and there will never be a viable socialist / marxist society. Aside from that, someone must have total power over the society to enforce wealth redistribution, and that power is more absolute than any that corporate forces can muster.
I'm a conservative because I believe in God. someone had to set the rules of the universe. otherwise, chaos would have insured long ago that we would all be a jumble of vaporous particles.
I'm a conservative because I KNOW I can do a better job of spending MY MONEY than some government bureaucrat.
And many more...

Let me give your the answer from a conservative. You have to decide what views are most important to you. Although I am conservative I do believe in a woman right to choose, but this isn't that high on my list since I am a dude and abortion is already legal.
Defending the country is a high priority. Nobody likes war, but to think you can live in a world without it is unrealistic. Remember the first priority of any gov't is to protect its citizens.
And the greed that some say we have - is not greed. We believe that if you work hard and earn it you should get to keep it. My money that work hard for should not be taken and given to those that don't contribute to society.

A whole slew of reasons. Different people have different reasons.
Money. That's a huge one. The ruling class want freedom to run their corporations like miniature governments - free from oversight, or labour organization. The republican party supports that right and is committed to pumping our tax dollars into their accounts.
Since they believe that they - the elitist ruling class deserve every advantage and that they the elite ruling class know what's best for earth - it stands to reason they would elect a party who most openly represents their agenda.
On the other end of the spectrum is the uninformed low to middle class conservative. They could care less about education, transit, or distribution of wealth. What they care about is what the gays and the blacks are doing or getting. They feel shunned and marginilized by the secular majority in the media and as a result turn to the party who they feel best represents their fundamentalist nature. The party they identify with because they look alike.
Another huge part is of course the military.
There is an intrinsic difference of opinion how the military should be used. Some Americans believe force should always be reserved strictly as a last line of defense.
Then again their counterpart believes the military should be used to enforce our foreign policy.
The second group believes that harsh language is paramount to military action. So they are prepared to retaliate against sword rattling with the actual sword.
A lot of the good republicans actually don't trust either party.
They have a distaste for politicians all together - but just to vote they go along with the party of their family and or community.

Well, since you can't grasp the logic of it, how can anyone explain it to you?
Being a conservative to me means being DAMNED proud of my country. Are we perfect? Hell, no - but I can't think of anyplace I'd rather live. It means a strong military and intel agencies. Hell, if Clintoon didn't spend eight years slashing intel and military budgets, we might not *be* in our current situation.
But the main thing that being a conservative means to me is PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. I really can't grasp why that is so hard for liberals to comprehend. We could *all* find excuses to be worthless.
I also believe that charity begins at home. I am fortunate enough to have a nine-month contract, with summers off. Ever since I started at this job, I have spent the better parts of my summers volunteering in my community. I do NOT think the government should play Robin Hood.

Just for the record, I am NOT conservative... but we need conservatives to have a healthy economic system. It's all about checks and balances. There are probably a lot of conservatives that feel the same way about liberals. Neither side makes sense when they are being extreme!

It was once said "if you are young and conservative you have no heart and if you are old and liberal you have no brain"
First you need to understand what the conservative political view advocates. If you don't know this then you shouldn't ask this insulting question. The current Republican regime is not conservative. That is why I laugh every time someone on the left says "cons this and cons that", they don't even understand who they are deriding.
I'm assuming you are too young to understand what a conservative is or if you are not young you are of such feeble mind it would be a waste of my time to try to explain it you.

Sorry but I don't understand the logic of wanting to give away taxpayer money to people that don't work, extreme social programs that only benefit a few, that eliminates the personal responsibility of citizens.
Why should we tax the "very rich" when the wealthy people are the ones that HIRE the poor/middle class? I don't understand the logic in that. BTW, the rich pay MOST of the taxes in this country.

Of course you don't understand the logic. You are a liberal, and logic is not something liberals understand. Conservatism is based on common sense, and common sense tells us that it's wrong to have an abortion just because you couldn't be more responsible while having sex. Common sense tells us that just because you don't want to work, you shouldn't be able to suck the welfare system. Common sense tells us that the only way to make sure we are not over run by liberal ideologies is to vote people into office who agree with our values. Common sense tells us that our values should come from a moral base, not from Hollywood. And common sense tells us that if we don't fight the terrorists over there, we will have to fight them over here.

I used to be fairly liberal, until I realized that some things didn't need to change, regardless of how others felt about them.
Having small children at home, I now carefully monitor what they watch on TV, because it's just not the same from when I was a kid.
