I am arguing that it is a manipulation

Ok, I'm not really going to be that helpful on the actual subject matter, because I know nothing about it really...but...

You start with researching about the topic....brainstorming....and then finally really finding a main theme, or original focus sentence of your paper. This, of course, is the thesis. You don't want to just come right out with your thesis though. Start the paper with a broad sentence. Sometimes you can even start with a corny famous quote. Something like

(Do NOT use this, it's propably really incorrect, I'm just trying to help!)

" For decades, marketing has been an excellent way for businesses to make more money" Then further lay down broad, general information about the origin of marketing. Then, explain how the world now, is basically marketing oriented. Everything is about the marketing. For example, even if there is a great book idea that someone came up with - if the publisher can't figure out how to market it, the story never gets told or heard! Then slowly near the end of the first paragraph, hit the reader with your main thesis argumentative sentence. As to make the paper more organized, you probably want to have two or three ideas you'll explain in the paper within that thesis statement, because later in the following 2nd and 3rd paragraphs (assuming your paper is about 4 paragraphs long ) you'll be arguing those points.

Example: "While Marketing is simply a way for companies to make more money, it has become a manipulation, crippling citizens from having various opinions displayed to them through different mediums like television, magazines, and novels".

Obviously, your paper won't be about that, but do you see how in the thesis, first you talk about how marketing is helpful, but then explain how it's bad for 3 reasons? That's how a good thesis should be.

Because starting the next paragraph, if you were writing a paper on my thesis that I just wrote, you would start talking about how marketing steers television in a certain way. Again, you would begin with a sentence that's descriptive of the first idea in your thesis. For my paper, it should be "Naturally, marketing is used for television." Then the paragraph would continue explaining that idea, and how it manipulates peoples decisions through TV. After you've finished arguing that one part of your theisis, end the paragraph.
You should be up to the 3rd paragraph at this point. Take that 2nd part of the theisis. " Marketing is increasingly popular in magazines" Explain it, and argue how people are manipulated through magazines. Finish the paragraph.

4th paragraph. Explain the last part of your thesis. Books. "Books are the oldest medium next to newspapers". Explain how marketing is the reason many stories don't get heard anymore. Argue about how marketing is a manipulation.

Now the 5th paragraph should be the closing. Sum it all up. "Clearly, marketing is necessary in this day and age, however, through TV, magazines, and Books, it causes many rocks of human nature to be unturned. Explain this idea. Wrap up the paper.

I know this probably wont help much, but if you follow the basic idea how how you introduce the thesis at the end of the opening paragraph, then make sure that the thesis has 3 parts, and break each of the following paragraphs down to explain the 3 parts of that thesis. Hope that helps, good luck!

Every attempt to persuad anyone to do anything is manipulative. After all, you would not bother to persuade anyone to do something unless it benefited you in some way. So, even your argumentative essay is manipulative. All marketing is psychological. People's decisions can ONLY be manipulated if you know how they have behaved in the past. For example you can't tempt a kid with candy if he doesn't like candy. Your thesis should not be about WHETHER marketing is manipulative but rather HOW marketers manipulate people and WHY it works (or doesn't).

Also, talk about what influences people to do the things they do. From birth, our biggest influences are our family, our friends, our public education, and media. They basically create our perception of the world. You could argue that the media creates a standard of what is accepted by the mainstream culture, and that public education reinforces it. Say...MTV for example. It tells these kids what is cool; what to wear, drive, listen to, etc. Then, someone who doesn't have MTV and has quite eccentric tastes compared to the others, comes into a public education environment, surrounded by the brainwashed children. These brainwashed children will ridicule the eccentric person for being different than them. At this point, the eccentric person will have to decide whether or not he/she will be a social outcast and stand for what he/she believes or join the majority (mainstream culture), surrenduring his/her individuality.

you can be like: Marketers are really con-artist who will do anything to sell their products; most marketers rely on manipulating the public to increase their sales. (just clean the sentence up a little; i came up with that in like 2 seconds...so it kinda sucks)

in your intro offer a few example and tell more about the topic and in the body u should include at least three reasons why this is bad. just conclude your paper after that. good luck. it sounds like a interesting topic.

After detailing the problem, like you did above, begin with your assumption. Then give supporting facts to back it up. Even argue against your conclusion to give balance. You may even change your own mind in the process - or better still, and your likely goal - change the minds of those who hold the opposing view.
