yes, political controversy is what makes people keep comming back to read more.
Noone wants to hear about your daily life except your relatives. Develop well-written content to get a loyal readership.

I see other people voicing their opinions about politics and religion. Some are quite interesting and ingenious and others are well, just plain boring or ridiculous. If you offer the option for people to comment and you get comments you don't like...........well, then you might consider that to be opening a can a worms. Just like you, people have their own opinions and will opt to express them. Hey, go for it. Don't be afraid. If I knew how to set up a 360 page I would. I don't think I have the patience.

Write about what interests you!
By the way, if you write about global warming, you ARE writing about politics.
And for some, it's a religion too!

You'd be opening a huge can of worms but if the two subjects are that interesting to you I think you should do it anyway. If not I would stay away from it.

You should talk about what ever you want on your blog, politics will open a whole can of whoops a-s-s as will religion but hey who cares...........
