Edwards v. Aguillard - Cite as 482 US 578

Edwards was the governor of the state of Louisianna. Aguillard was the parent of a child in Louisianna.

Louisianna had established a law which required the teaching of "creation science" if the theory of evolution was to be taught as well in the public schools. A group of parents sued, claiming that this violated the 1st Amendment's "Establishment clause". The US Supreme Court, in a 7-2 decision, agreed.

The court held that the legislature's intent in enacting this law was to discredit evolution by requiring the teaching of creation, a religious belief, at every point where evolution was taught.
