A good graphic design program is broader and should give you the foundation to go multiple directions with your problem-solving skills. Graphic designers can be quite specific in their focus or they can be very general. Aside from the kinds of things others have already mentioned, graphic designers might design information systems, signage programs, museum or exhibition designs, educational resources. They can be involved in total identity programs for companies and can develop everything from the logo and letterhead to the web presence to the layout and furnishings of the offices.

If you want to specialize in web design, ask alot of questions at the schools you are considering. Certainly knowing software is important, but too often these programs are very techie and they are not giving you enough universal principles for organization, communication and typographic understanding. If the school begins a discussion with you by listing specific software you will learn, RUN as fast as you can because they aren't going to give you the depth you really need. That goes for the graphic design programs too. Just because a school says you can get a degree in something doesn't mean it'll be a good program.

A good designer is a problem solver. Knowing what buttons to push on your laptop doesn't make you a problem solver. And today's latest software is tomorrow's out-of-date and out-of-touch dinosaur.

Hey,
my mom is a graphic designer, so I might not be able to tell you that much about web designer. My mom has been a graphic designer for many, many years now, so she is very good and gets a lot of business. She can design postcards, websites, large posters that go on walls, business cards, and she even designs the graphics for the sermon series at our church! I don't really know what a web designer does, but I hope this helps! Have fun in college!

PS. If you are a graphic designer, don't expect to start from the top in pay. It just gets better over time. Heck, my mom's making 50 bucks an hour.

Thanks!

Well a graphic desinger is going to do more advertising and marketing things, like making labels for certain products and billaboards. A web designer ans going to make, well, web pages. In both you are going to have to use creativity to design layouts etc. The web designer is going to be restricted to the web while the graphic designer is going to be doing visual things out in the world.

I'm a graphic designer and a web designer: Here's the breakdown:

GRAPHIC DESIGNER:
Print and or Packaging: these things can be for example designing tags for Old Navy clothing, posters, business cards, magazine layout, photography and logo design, designing perfume boxes and labels for cereal boxes or cans.

WEB DESIGNER:
Logo design, online banner advertisements, flash web pages (animation required). Web stuff is more technical and requires that you know more coding. Most gals go for graphic design.
