you are going down to earth, because you are heading for the centre of the gravitational force. its like if you landed on the moon, wherever you land on it, you are still going down to it. down applies only to a place which has gravity and so, on a planet, down is towards the gravity and up is away from it. so, in space, technically, there is no up and down, just coordinate directions.

Hence if the Earth's surface is underneath you, then you're going down to Earth. If it's above your head then you're going up to Earth. Presumeably in this case you will need to turn your spaceship over so that the Earth's surface is below you before you land, otherwise it'll end up landing on it's roof !
