One of the interesting physical properties of cornstarch is that when mixed into a paste with water it becomes a non-Newtonian fluid. It is actuall a "dilatant" fluid which means that it thickens when subjected to shearing forces or shock. If you mix up a thickish paste and put it on a non-porous surface then rub your hand rapidly over the cornstarch paste it will appear to solidify and roll into little balls. These will then return to their more liquid state when you stop applying the stressing force. It's a weird fun experiment.

Katrisha, I don't know of an alternative to cornstarch. But it's readily available at the grocery store. The project sounds cool.
