They're both amphetamines. Which make sense given the context.

Benny is a slang name for benzadrine (link 1). It was one of the first large-scale amphetamines, and was often prescribed by doctors as a weight-loss drug until it became obvious that many people were abusing it. Eventually it became such a problem that it was available ONLY by prescription.

Dexies, on the other hand, are one of the more commonly abused drugs by students. Its medical name is dextroamphetamine (link 2), and it is used by the military to suppress the need for sleep and as an attention focuser. You can see why students would be interested as well. This, too, became a strictly controlled drug in the 1970's.

Bennys are Benzadrine (sp)...pharamaceutical speed.

Same with Dexies, which are Dexedrine.

Dexie: Dexamphetamine is one of the most well known types of amphetamines

Bennys: Benzodiazepines are minor tranquillisers that affect the central nervous system by slowing down the body physically, mentally and emotionally.

they are speed those are slang terms. benzedrine and dextroamphetamine are the real names
