Just remove the hard drive from the old laptop... Install into the shell... Attach via USB cable to another PC and read the drive!

To recover all types of deleted files you can download Wondershare Data Recovery -> http://bit.ly/1qaHXCv
Any time that a file is deleted on a hard drive, it is not erased. Instead, the information that points to the location of the file on the hard drive is erased. This pointer, along with other pointers for every folder and file on the hard drive, is saved in a section near the beginning of the hard drive and is used by the operating system to compile the directory tree structure. By erasing the pointer file, the actual file becomes invisible to the operating system. Eventually, the hard drive will write new data over the area where the old file is located. The data recovery utilities search for data on the hard drive that does not have corresponding pointer information and present you with a list of these files. Your chances of fully recovering a file diminish the longer you wait after you deleted the file since the probability that the file has been overwritten increases.

your best bet is to remove the hard drive, or if possible, boot with an external monitor and copy the files via network. You can also get a 2.5" adapter that will allow you to put the hard drive in a destop computer...

You get a 2.5 to 3.5 inch hard drive adapter cable and set the drive to slave - then with your desktop computer turned off install it like any hard drive. Boot up and you will see the drive in My Computer. Open it up and navigate to the files you want to save and drag them to your "big" hard drive. Job done. The adapter cost about 10.00 bucks and it is a very easy job.

Does the laptop still boot up? If so, try to connect it to an external monitor and used flash drives or CD/DVDs to save you critical data to.
