Some of the best ways to help fall asleep are to make sure that you don't have a TV in your bedroom. Beds are for two things, sleeping and sex. Exercise during the day will also help, as will eating healthily in general. Alcohol, even though it can help you fall asleep, it doesn't provide you with quality sleep. So one drink may be beneficial, but not more than that. One person said to count backwards from 1000 to 0, a different take on that is to count backwards by 3's. It will keep your mind more focused and will help keep it from wandering to other things.
Also try to go to sleep at the same time each night. And if you are in bed for over 30 minutes and can't fall asleep, get up and do something else. Otherwise you're making your bed someplace that you associate with not being able to sleep.

I've got the same problem. It seems as soon as my head hits the pillow my mind is off and running....the new sleeping pill , Lunestra, is non - habit forming and might help you if nothing else works.
If you don't want to go that route then you could try one of the forms of meditation like yoga, where you develop the ability to tune out the world. That might take too long...so maybe if you bought one of those machines or tapes that play the sounds of nature...like the ocean etc. that might relax you enough to fall asleep. Good luck

1. avoid caffeine
2. nicotine is also a stimulant.
3. Give the over active worrying part of your mind a monotanous but demanding task to complete. This should involve both visualising and verbalising, as we worry in both these modalities. - Try counting backwards from 1000 to 0 making sure to both say and see each digit in your minds eye. Notice when your mind wonders off and gently nudge it back on to the counting task.
Don't try to ban certain thoughts - this only makes them stronger - give yuor brain other jobs to do instead.
You've got more chance of falling asleep if your brain is engaged in non stimulating thoughts.
Day time exercise and exposure to sun light will also help.
My best tip however is to try to stop awake to listen to either an audio book or speech radio - always works for me.
good luck

There are also specific herbs, homeopathic remedies, essential oils, music, & accupressure points, that are relaxing. Also, the frequency of 'blue' ... A dark royal blue party light bulb in 15 minutes makes me start yawning every time, even when a regular bulb is on at the same time. And there's no need to swallow any liquid that may otherwise make me get up again to 'unload' it!

A lack of excersize can also cause one trouble in the sleep department. But, if too close to bedtime, it can exascerbate the problem.

They aren't good for you at all. You would be happy to know what exercise does for your body, and your sleep habits. Maybe you don't exercise - but for whatever reason, you need to think about it and start exercising. You will love what it does for your sleep. I had sleep problems for a while. When I'm going to the gym at least three times per week, I sleep like a baby every night.

Try keeping a note pad beside your bed. Write down whatever is troubling your or continuously coming to mind. The gesture of writing down the thought is a way of releasing it so you can move on to something more relaxing. Also try meditating just before bed as a way of winding down your mind and body. You can also try having a glass of wine just before bed or a cup of hot tea preferable sleepy time herbal tea.

Try some hot herbal tea. Peppermint tea or chamomile tea is great for relaxation and helps to calm you down at the end of the night and they are all natural. Also, try a warm bath with some calming bath salts or bath oils.

I've always found chamomile tea to work for me. But I have found that it always makes me have to get up and use the bathroom in the middle of the night...that is the only downside - but I do sleep well otherwise and don't wake up with the groggies!
