Considering the history of indians confined to live in indian reserves to avoid being killed by white settlers , the brutal treatment of slaves , the head tax charged on chinese immigrants who built the Pacific railway , and the total ban on Chinese immigrants to America for almost 50 years , the ill treatment of civil right activists during the 50s and 60s , the shootings of students in Kent state unversity during the anti-Vietnam war protest, etc etc.

Because they still live in the 1700s and have this big "thing" about "freedom from the British crown", not being a colony etc etc.

Everyone else moved on centuries ago!

The go on about "freedom" not realising that actually everyone in Europe has it too. In fact we have a lot more "freedom" in Britain than they do. We also have "freedom of speech" and "freedom to practice your religion" and all ther other "freedoms" they have. Britain is not like it was 200 years ago! But as most Americans are uneducated about other countries they don't understand this.

American sure isn't a very "free" place for those who aren't rich middle class WASPS.

It is because, despite the things you mention, there is no other modern nation which has provided for it's citizens, the wide berth of individual and social freedoms afforded to Americans.

Do we always use that freedom correctly? Of coarse not.

Man by his very nature is imperfect. However you would be very hard pressed to find ANY nation in the world that does not have the same history of bigotry and examples of social injustice that you seem to believe is exclusive to America. Nor, will you find ANY nation that has done more to correct it's past injustices than
America has.

This is the land of the free, because the average citizens can band together and change things. You may have noticed that the very things you have mentioned have been battled with and overcome. Perhaps not completely or perfectly, but leaps and bounds over how other countries have dealt with the same problems.

This is the land of the free because each individual is free to worship any God they want. Free to work and live anywhere they want. Free to associate with whomever they want. Free to tell the truth in any media form they choose. This list goes on and there is NO other nation on the planet that even comes close to bestowing upon it's citizens the freedoms that America does.

The fact that you can ask that question in a world wide forum without fear of the government knocking down your door in the middle of the night and dragging you off, is the best evidence that
America truly is:

The Land of the Free.

It's definitely a flawed country but it is still the land of the partially free. You're not allowed to travel to places like Cuba and you don't really own your house because the government can take it or say you need their permission to fix a leak in the roof, but you are still living in a society that is based on the principles of freedom. Consider Germany where you can be arrested for home schooling your child. Some people like freedom when it allows them to make piles of money but hate it when someone else says something they don't like. But freedom allows you to be stupid too, and to indulge in incredibly poor taste. And some are more free than others

Land of the free came to be after 1776. The Native American genocide was in the 1600'w=s, way before anybody thought of the concept land of the free.

It's marketing, like "war on terror", etc. Even Americans are going to raise an eyebrow if you call it it "war to plunder oil, finish daddy's business and keep potential political threats under the boot" and "Land of the Free if you're middle class, white and like doing the things we want you to do anyway."

Because our country has taken awhile to evolve into what it is today, doesn't mean that our citizens have less rights than citizens of other countries. We are more free than any other country in the world. We are still in our teens when compared to most other developed countries. Our citizens have more freedoms than British citizens and that country has existed for a thousand years longer, or compare us to Egypt which has existed for at least 7000 years. I would like to see you try to exercise free speech in that country.

Quit trying to blame the US for all the evils in the world. They existed before us and they will continue to exist long after modern man is gone from this planet.

The Constituion states that "ALL men are equal" and Congress should not support any religions, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
I just don't think we are the U.S. is the Land of the Free, do you?

Put like that, it sounds pretty messed up. I do know that my own family came from Lithuania before the turn of the last century, and they were fleeing war, and religious persecution. I think lot of ppl who came here were definitely running from worse conditions at their original home...or at least they thought so...

Comes from a line in our national anthem " ..land of the free, and the home of the brave..". While this country is not perfect, we have our warts, it is one of the best places to live in the world. We do not have to block out borders to keep people from leaving. You and others can criticize all you want and not have to worry about that knock on the door thanks to the sacrafices of many others. Myself I would not want to live anyplace else. We have many freedoms every day that many other people in the world can only dream about.
