Lets say you are on the freeway and you see way ahead of you the traffic is slowed down and backed up. You can downshift from 5th gear to 4th and let the clutch out, the engine will slow you down, then again to slow down more downshift into 3rd and do the same thing. This is how you use your gears. You can do likewise with an automatic tranny. say on the freeway pull it down out of over drive and it will slow you down then on down to a lower gear till you are almost stopped without touching your brakes.
