when you're talking travel abroad you either do or you don't. it's like pregnancy.......you're never just a little pregnant so once you start to travel it's an adventure the whole thing.
mind you this is the age of technology so you may opt out after you've begun, if you wish.

Join a travelers club and find people with like ideas, go on the Internet and look for clubs in your area.
As an unaccompanied female you can go to Hong Kong very safely, but for Africa you should look for a companion.
Go to a Youth Hostel and post notices on the notice board.
