Is it just out of respect that they are usually traded after a game or is there a rule in dealing players?

No. I don't think so, because the referees get a roster sheet at the beginning of the game and those players can only play for that team when their name is on the roster until the game is over. I think they have to wait until the game is over.

Most players DON'T have a say. Some have a "no trade" clause, and they have to waive it to be traded. Before the trade deadline a player can be traded at almost anytime, there is a roster freeze around Christmas, The player CAN'T play for the other team though unless he is listed on the pre-game lineup. So unless the trade was complete the other team isn't likely to have him listed.

Yes a player could be traded in game. I think if a player is traded in game ( don't think most gms do business during a game however) the team will have to send him to the locker room as he is no longer that teams property.
I heard a story of this happening in baseball between a double header, the teams also were playing each other. Both players took off there uniforms handed to one another and walked into there new teams dugout to start game 2 of the day.
Iam sure in theory, this could happen in hockey between intermissions but probably will never see.

Yes a player can be traded at anytime before the deadline passes. The team could even have the player leave a game and be on his way before the game he was in even ended. They would however be shortening their bench.

they can, but usually the trade will not be announced during a game the player is in. Last week, forsberg was on the ice for warm ups, they called him off the ice and told him he had been traded.

other times the team might sit a player if a trade is very close.

No, because that happened last night with the Thrashers. We had to wait till the end of the other persons game before the trade was final. Pulse the person traded has a say if the team is a seller.

As long as the trade deadline has not passed.
Even though he has been traded, he could compete for the rest of the game though.

the GM's are at the game. they aren't making phone calls to talk about trades as the game is going on. that seems silly. probably scouting or thinking about a move...but i doubt actually making one.
