I used the customize toolbar feature, and I put all my favorite toolbar buttons into that blank toolbar that's just below the address bar, then clicked "Done". Well, the next time I opened FireFox, the buttons were all gone. What am i doing wrong here?

Yeah, mine were still there. Possibilities: (1) you or your Firefox (who knows who or how) lost track of which toolbars were supposed to be "viewed" - go to View and Toolbars and pick and choose until your favorite buttons miraculously appear again in the correct position. (2) You installed *another* Firefox add-on that "crowded out" the buttons from their proper place...got a downward pointing arrow toward the right end of the button bar? Click it to see if it's got buttons hidden behind it. (3) Is the bar blank again? Try rebuilding it. (4) If all else fails, then as a last gasp, maybe try going to the Help item in the menu bar and click Check for Updates, and if there are any, then apply them and try step (4) again? [P.S. One other possibility before I post...Is the blank area of which you speak, a *Firefox* blank area, or is it owned by some *other* application, like say, Google, or a Firefox *addon*?]
