i read it is sometimes derived from the brains of cows. it is naturally occuring in brains and it is taken from cows.

Natural melatonin is made from the extracts of the pineal glands of animals, usually sheep.
Synthetic grade melatonin is manufactured under laboratory control.

No it is not derived from mad cows. It is a great supplement and should only be taken at bedtime in the evenings. Good Stuff!!!
