For the most part it wasn't. We're a hunter-gatherer species, omnivorous. Our ancestors knew where to find the tubers, rhizomes, and insects they ate.

If you want to get a little closer to modern times than that,
consider: men hunt in groups. The knowledge of animal behavior allows a group to divide in two: those who flush out a particular animal, and those who will lie in ambush for it to come running in a panic. Their knowledge of animal behavior would let them know that the animal will run, and to predict where to be to ambush it.

In places where there are fish, men build funneling fish traps. This is from their knowledge that a fish will go into the big part of the funnel and all the way to the trap, but won't swim back up the narrow part facing toward it when it's in the trap.

But again, except for the Inuit and specialized hunters like the bison-following Amerindians, ancient people weren't completely dependent on animals for food.

early man was no doubt the weakest animal on the planet, therefore he had to develop ways of surviving against the stronger and faster animals. He did this by developing his brain, which meant that he had to learn about the other animals in order to compete with them. Hope this helps.

Ancient people did not have domestic game and depended upon the availability of wild game for their source of meat. They therefore followed the migration of the herds, such as buffalo or goats.
