I'm not looking to get involved with a band and make a living out of it. Would just like to be able to get together with a few people to play. Any suggestions on an instrument to concentrate on? By the way, I play piano (4 years experience), guitar (1 year experience), and drums (just started 2 months ago); open to other suggestions though.

Keyboards would be good since you play piano. You don't have to be good, just keep it simple and pretend you know what you're doing. Bass guitar would be good to. Almost every band wants a bass guitar, but few people want to play them. The same with drums, except they might expect you to be good on the drums. Nobody cares if you are good on bass or keyboards, they'll just be glad you're there. Guitar is the worst, there are just too many out there.

A tambourine is always nice. Did wonders for the Partridge family! Kidding. Maybe go to a vocal coach and explore that side of yourself. You could play all the instruments in the world but if you cant vocally carry a tune then joining a band is sorta pointless. Just keep studying and make yourself well rounded with your tallents. An easy step would be a bass then there are so many other versions of stringed instruments that could definately keep you learning for the rest of your life! They are each unique and open a doorway to new and exciting genres.! Best of luck to you!

I guess it depends on who these other people you play with play. Sounds like you can jump around from instrument to instrument. But if it's a money thing, I would go with being a guitarist or a singer. The down side to that is that EVERYONE want to be a singer or guitarist. Bass is usually relegated to the person who plays the guitar the worst. Since you've played the keyboards the longest, why not just say with that. I think you'll be in high demand. Hope that helps!

you might want to go with guitar.....just keep practicing and working at it.......there's one is pretty much every band so its perfect if you're going to be playing with a group of people....you already have some experience so just stick with it...
another important point is that you're going to be playing whatever instrument you pick very often, so you have to make sure you pick the instrument you enjoy playing the most.

I would say either stick with guitar or try bass. They are both extremely universal in any kind of music you want to play, and they are both fun to play in a band. Since you already have a year of guitar under your belt, it wouldn't take long to accomplish this. Good luck.

ive played guitar for ... 3 yrs now!
pretty much easy to learn if ur playing chords (rhythm guitar), u can teach urself that, just look up chords websites like azchords.com --but if u want to learn lead.. just warning u, it's tough!
bass is supposed to be easier..its got less strings, so i guess that helps =) haha but if u already play guitar, just use what uve got! uv got more chances of a good combo w/ guitar, more than piano, too. unless u wanna go all keane :p
