getting married, having a baby, a great big accomplishment... something so big that you have to symbolize some how

From the time of my (first) honeymoon, I have purchased a plate to symbolize big events. The kids, since they've come along, have helped with and encouraged this tradition - they came with me, shopping to commemorate when we became an abuse-free single-parent household, when I got remarried, when we moved from one province to another...

Some of the plates were designed to be hung on a wall as an ornament. Some are antique dinner plates, and a couple are really inexpensive mass production china. Each just "said" the right thing at the right time to us.

Now when we sit in my kitchen, we can look around the room and remember all the big events in our life as a family...

I love my plate collection, and I hope to hand the tradition on to my daughter, who recently moved away. Her birthday is coming up, and I plan to purchase her an "independance" plate to commemorate her newfound adulthood.

I am not exactly sure I understand your question. Your examples are just that...examples of changes in life. They are not symbols. If you mean what do you use in your life to represent these great changes in life, then perhaps the question could be better answered.
Certainly in marriage, there is the preverbial symbol of a ring. In a new job, perhaps there is a new and more expensive car that is a sign of increased abundence and social stature. Other more subtle changes in life can be symbolized in many others ways as well.

Hmm...
Tattoo, new car, different hair color, new wardrobe, new pet, new house, new furniture, a celebratory dinner....
