Yes! A nation is only as strong as it's weakest link. Concerning economy, one must take into consideration, those links that make the rules, as well. Such as, governing bodies. Bad decisions make weak links!

I am a sixth generation Michigander. My family was here for the boom, and it's now here for the bust. The problem is that Michigan is full of deadbeat union workers who think they deserve a compensation package worth $73/hour for work which can be performed by a reasonably intelligent orangutan.
Demographically, Michigan is two seperate states. "Poor Me" Michigan is the southeast portion thereof. It starts at the Ohio line and goes as far north as US 10 and runs east-west from Lakes Erie/St Clair/Huron to US 27. People inside that part (which includes such stellar places as Detroit, Pontiac, Flint, and Saginaw) see themselves as "abandoned" by the Big Three, and are unwilling to better themselves. Contrast this mindset to the prosperous western part of the state. The Grand Rapids metro area is growing by leaps and bounds. Would you like to guess which part features fewer union workers?
Before you ask, I live in the unfortunate eastern section, but strive to show my neighbors the success which is Grand Rapids.
Let's pass Right to Work in Michigan, and you'll see a recovery. Of course, it will still be incumbent upon employers to shun former UAW members, as their work habits (or lack thereof) are impossible to change.

I don't think so Heidi, I live in Michigan, cars not being sold is one of the main factors in why Mi. economy is so bad. We are to invested in this industry and need to diversify. On of the reasons that the big three cannot compete in a global market is the cost of health care. The CEO of GM has said that $1500 of every new car sold goes to provide health care coverage to its employees and retiree's. I assume this goes for most industry's that provide coverage to their employee's. This makes it hard to compete with Japan for instance as they have universal health care, and do not have this huge sum coming out of the pockets of their industry's. I know I got off subject a bit but it is intertwined with why Michigan is in such poor financial shape.

No, I don't believe that one is only as strong as his weakest link. I believe one is as strong as the stability of the combination of all their friends and allies along with himself. That is, United States is as strong as the stability of the World Economy. Proof of that is that when the United States entered the Great Depression, the rest of the world (minus U.S.S.R.) fell into it soon afterward (some not as bad as others).

If the chain is holding something up, well yeah lol. If the chain is just hanging from the ceiling for some reason, then if the bottom link is the weakest, who cares. However if the top is the weakest, you're screwed.
I don't believe the United States of America is a chain though so it doesn't have links.

The President and his administration, along with our military machine, has done everything in it's power to derail Michigan because we are a black stronghold, as well as a democratic stronghold, and we were formerly pioneers in design technology and the physical construction of war machines...tanks, planes...of course we are embarking on new fuel technologies, and I am sure that we will be punished by big oil. Our government has done it's best to outsource all of our jobs.
When the attacks of 911 came it was Michigan resources that supplied blood, and artificial skin...made in Michigan, along with many of our firefighters, paramedics, and medical staff.
When Katrina hit it was Michigan who was one of the first, and strongest presences to house the homeless, and send relief...and our "President" hates us for that.

Yes, and we are only as free as a padlocked prison door, so we should base our freedom on California where there are more jails than there are schools thanks to Ronald Reagan, and now Arnold, the (Ex)terminator wants to spend billions of tax-payer dollars building even more.
Of course, with a grandfather that designed concentration camps during the Nazi's reign over Germany, who would expect anything different?
