I want a nice green lawn with no dandelions but I dont want to have a lawn service to do it. Does anybody know of a way of doing this without spending a lot of money like home made remadies.
Im on a fixed income. Thank you.

It will take a bit, but the best way to do this involves a few steps.

A) Let your lawn grow longer. For every 1/4 inch longer you let your grass grow, you get rid of about 10% of your weeds. So, set your mower blade a bit higher.

B) Use corn gluten meal. It is kind of expensive if you buy it in a garden store, due to the patent on it as a pre-emergent herbicide, but see if you can't pick it up at a feed store (it is much cheaper when sold as poultry food). If you live near a grain mill, you may even be able to pick it up for free. It's a waste product of making ethanol and various other products from corn. Apply it a few times a year.

C) Use a dandelion digger to remove the biggest dandelions by the roots. Dandelion diggers are long pointy metal things with two prongs. You simply slide it down along the root and cut it way down in the ground.

D) Overseed. When you see patches in your lawn, plant more grass seed. Use a mix that includes some fast growing seeds such as annual rye grass.

I would suggest that you do not buy a product that kills weeds and spread or spray it all over your lawn. Too many people do that and they are spreading herbicides where they don't need to be.

Instead by a product such as Scott's Weed-b-gon and spray it on the young dandelion plant as needed. It will show signs of dying within hours. Every couple of days walk your yard and spray as necessary before the seed heads form.

This product comes in a small spray container for under $10. Or you can buy a larger container that attaches to a hose and you can spray that as needed if you don't like the hand pump version.

Hope this helps. It works for me.

Apply proper amounts of fertilizer to keep a dense lawn. Mow at a high setting such as three inches. Water adequately to keep healthy and thriving desirable turf. Avoid mechanical edging; dandelions always get a foothold when bare soil is exposed. Spot treat existing dandelions with a selective broadleaf weed control. They are perennial.

Both of the above answers are great. If your neighbors have dandelions in their yards, your lawn will suffer. If you get one and there are none for 100 miles, it sometimes can fertilize itself in a process known as pathogenesis. If the above two fail, pray. Good Luck.

Don't cut your grass too short , it encourages weeds. When you see a weed start to appear pull it out straight away, eventually they will become less of a problem. If you already have heaps of weeds, use a selective herbicide, or feed and weed, there are plenty of cheap ones on the market.
