Going to be building a PC using E6300, Core 2 Duo 1.86 GHz (1066 FSB) with Vista Premium (32 bit).

I can't afford 4 GB at 800 MHz RAM, so what's better:

4 GB at 533 MHz
or
2 GB at 800 MHz

I want Vista running smoothly and the ability to do some decent multi-tasking and average gaming. I also want this system to last 4-5 years, and since Vista is recommending 2 GB, I'm afraid it won't be enough in 4-5 years...? But...I don't plan on doing really heavy video editing, etc.....

I would go for the 4GB. There really isn't that big of difference between 533 Mhz and 800 Mhz bus speed...at least not so much that you would be able to notice a difference between the 2. More at a slower speed is always better than less at a faster speed (especially when we are taking about twice as much).

More RAM is always better...

Don't forget that Vista supports using USB memory to speed up the machine also! You should also get a USB memory stick of equal size to your RAM and dedicate it to Vista for caching and speed-up!

If you're worried about upgrading later, I'd just go with the slower 4GB and then in a few years upgrade completely.

Get the two gigs. If you end up needing more, you can always add more memory once the price of DDR2 800 comes down.

Okay, get the fastest RAM your frontside can handle.

Go with 2GB of 800MHz and upgrade later.

Don't get a Dell, they "feel" too cheap.
