well, i have checked the coolant container near the radiator....its above too hot...BUT the radiator isnt full of coolant or w/e....and i dont see any kinks in the hose, i may try the flushing of the radiator..but not sure, nd how much would a gasket be...by chance? :S

also...again, lol, my gparents got this for me used....and i looked at the radiator,a nd it looks like it has some of that...oxidation on it...could that mean that it may be the radiator? but, its only over heating in less then about 5 mins...and its just sitting in place

sorry for all the added details, but i just talked to my gramps, i guess he doesnt have EVERY bolt tightened, could that lead to over heating, and coudl oxidation on the radiator be bad? and i still thank everyone for their contributions

If that's the original radiator it's way past the end of it's normal lifespan. It's probably 70% clogged. Even if you unclogged it, it would probably start leaking and give out alltogether soon. Get a new one for $100.

I assume you have checked all your hoses and your radiator for leaks, and that the coolant level is good.

I would next check the fan, maybe even replace it, I assume you have a clutch-driven fan, these clutches sometimes wear out.
There's not that much you can do, maybe a repair manual lists a test procedure, but it might be as well to replace it.
Also, so long your vehicle can maintain a speed over 30mph, the fan becomes useless so if your vehicle overheats above 30mph even thou you've been driving at that speed for some time, then it's not the fan.

If all this is ok, when the engine is completely cold, if when starting and driving it starts to overheat within minutes (less than 5 as a rule) or if the temperature rises faster than it used to, I'm afraid you might have a leaking cylinder head gasket....

But check everything else first, the head gasket is a last resort because of cost and pita factor.

My mercury Cougar was overheating and I changed the radiator and got rid of it really fast I guess the problem was solved after I changed the radiator .Also check if the radiator cap is on right and also check for any leaks under the radiator. Always carry Antifreeze and water in the back of the car if you travel in it everyday check all hoses and belts for any damage it may occur after 140,000 miles

Have you tried draining the radiator and putting fresh anti-freeze? Could be your radiator is clogged.Look for any kinks in hoses that may not be letting the water flow smoothly..When was the last time you changed or checked your oil?
