Should we drop foreign oil in favor of alternative fuels?

As we all have come to realize, the price of gas has skyrocketed over the better half of a decade. I believe this is the result of foreign nations realizing how dependant we are on their fuel. We are destroying our planet faster than any other nation in the world. Much of that destruction is a direct result of our dependency on fossil fuels. Should we switch to alternative feuls such as EA5 Ethonol or Hyrdregen? If yes, how will we accomplish this fast enough to save our planet and prevent the ice caps from melting?

Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. Ethanol and methanol can be made from plants. Regeneration of those plants can go on for eons.

The people sitting on the oil don't like us and don't want us in their land. New technology can create new jobs and can be sold to our friends in other countries to help them break away from dependence on foreign oil. New fuels could be made that are envrionmentally friendly (output of a hydrogen car is water), safe, and inexpensive. Incentives can be given such as a million dollars to the scientist or team that develops each alternative that is proven to meet that criteria. Americans have proven in the past that we can do anything we set out to do. We sometimes need a kick in the tush to get of that tush and make it happen. If the Iraq war and high gas prices aren't kick enough one can but wonder what is needed to act as a tush kick.

Currently we have enough oil in our strategic reserves to handle existing vehicles with some conversion to half and half or total to methanol etc. So by 2010 we can be well on our way so that by 2020 or earlier be totally self sufficient for energy. Solar, wind, nuclear, geothermal, water power done properly nothing can stop us.

Drop would mean stopping the import of foreign oil immediately. We are not ready to be completely independent yet. it would help...BUT....millions rely on the $ we give their poor nations to buy the oil....millions would starve....granted they arent Americans but they are human beings....it sucks...but thats life
