Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. Ethanol and methanol can be made from plants. Regeneration of those plants can go on for eons.
The people sitting on the oil don't like us and don't want us in their land. The Arabs seem to want to live like they did in the 14th Century at the height of the Ottoman Empire when Islam spread like wild fire. We are seen as infidels on their sacred land. We need to ask ourselvs is a few extra barrels of crude oil worth all the money and death we have spent in recent years? If they want to live like that, I say let them.
New technology can create new jobs and can be sold to our friends in other countries to help them break away from dependence on foreign oil. New fuels could be made that are envrionmentally friendly (output of a hydrogen car is water), safe, and inexpensive. Incentives can be given such as a million dollars to the scientist or team that develops each alternative that is proven to meet that criteria. Americans have proven in the past that we can do anything we set out to do. We sometimes need a kick in the tush to get of that tush and make it happen. If the Iraq war and high gas prices aren't kick enough one can but wonder what is needed to act as a tush kick.
Currently we have enough oil in our strategic reserves to handle existing vehicles with some conversion to half and half or total to methanol etc. So by 2010 we can be well on our way so that by 2020 or earlier be totally self sufficient for energy. Solar, wind, nuclear, geothermal, water power done properly nothing can stop us.

i imagine international warming is a fantasy. at the same time as there would were a small boost interior the international temperature, it isn't going touching on to any synthetic events evaluate: Of all the CO released into the ambience, guy is to blame for below a really tiny fraction; mom Nature emits the most, by a wide margin. (ninety 9:a million by some estimates) the very acceptable computer fashions can in effortless words account for some variables in modeling the earth's ecosystem; there is in simple terms no longer sufficient computing means interior the entire international to run a simulation no longer heavily depending on guestimations, or different artwork on the modeled parameters. medical info expenses for quite a few classes in which CO degrees were a lot larger than modern-day and not using a corresponding temperature boost correlation. there is medical info of image voltaic international warming occuring on different planets (e.g. Mars) which could not be the end results of CO. The sunlight is the biggest element influencing the international temperature. Now, I comprehend this submit gained't win me any followers, or make me the darling of Gore disciples, or others obsessed on international warming and guy's alleged function. i comprehend that i'm a degreed engineer, and that i favor solutions sponsored by sound technology and info. If this answer receives a minimum of a few human beings to pass out and search for the obtainable medical info, both professional and con, and receives a minimum of a few human beings to question the validity of the assumptions, then i'm happy with that. in the different case, question authority!

Drop would mean stopping the import of foreign oil immediately. We are not ready to be completely independent yet. We have not built adequate infrastructure to allow ourselves to become totally self-sufficient. If you think gas is expensive now, you would not believe how expensive it would be if we just stopped importing foreign oil. Our government and multi-national energy interests have kept us dependent on foreign oil in the name of profits for stock holders. They still have us over a barrel.

You know, the Sun puts out more energy in a minute than we probably have done since we came down from the trees. Even the miniscule portion that reaches us should be harnessed, somehow. It won't burn out for a couple billion more years. Definitely something to look into.

Ahhh, another algore clone. How about the libs let us drill our own oil. And the statement " We are destroying our planet faster than any other nation in the world" is ridiculous. I believe if you looked at it, china would hold that claim, and they are exempt from your precious kyoto.
I was buried in snow and ice this winter. and now the mexicans are having tortilla riots because everyone is burning corn in their cars. yuk yuk yuk.
