cloning goes hand in hand with stem cell research.

With stem cell research we might develop the pathways to regrow damaged tissue for implantation however if the stem cell used at the beginning was not your own (and clearly, for most tissue types, it could not be if you are a fully developed human) that new tissue would still face rejection in a recipient.

If cloning were possible with humans (we can not currently clone any primate), we could start that stem cell with the recipients DNA in effect making any resulting tissue a perfect match for the recipient and dramatically reducing chances of rejection.

here are not benefits of cloning another human. That is best left to nature. Stem cell research may be another matter. There may be enough benefits from that to help find cures for diseases or prevent most birth defects. There is a lot of controversy concerning stem cell research, but I am not aware of what the arguments are. One thing for sure, the research should not involved the taking or maiming of another life form.

The theoretical benefits of cloning are limited only by the human imagination. You could regrow an organ for transplant and never have to worry about rejection. You could grow new heart valves, new muscle, new skin, clean blood for transfusions and not have to worry about all the side effects of donated blood. You could regenerate nerves and cure quadraplegia. You could cure certain types of cancer like lymphomas by wiping out ALL of the bone marrow then injecting new, non-cancerous marrow. You could make new beta cells for Type I diabetes, you could heal all sorts of diseases.

Practically, we don't know if any of this will actually work, since we (sadly) don't have enough data, but the possibilities are practically limitless.
