If you just want to super or subscript, there is no need to use character map - it is way to much work :) Here is a way that will allow you to super or subscript ANY text:

H20 - here you want to subscript the 2. Type the text first - all three characters then highlight the 2 and press Control =
402 meters - if you need to say 40 square meters the two needs to be superscript right? Type the characters, highlight the 2 and press Control Shift =
Eesy Peezy :) Any text you can highlight, you can super or subscript like this. Tip - ig you need to super or subscript the last character in a word, then be sure to press space before you highlight the last character otherwise the rest of the sentence will also be in super or subscript. If you do accidentally super or subscript the wrong character, just highlight again and press the Control = or Control Shift = buttons again. Have fun:)

To open Character Map, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Character Map.

To access Super/Subscript via Character Map: Open Character Map; change the "Group by" category to "Unicode Subrange." The change will cause a small window to open/pop-up. Scroll to and select for, Super/Subscript.
