Find the circumference of the whole thing (pi x diameter) and then divide by 2

2007-02-26 08:12:26 · answer #1 · answered by Karen C 3 · 0 0

Since circumference is pi X d or 2pi X r

half that would be pi X r

Why was that so hard? "Divide the circumference of a full circle by 2!"

"Why would you add the diameter?" I wonder to myself? A half circle would be an arc through 180 degrees. Who says it has to enclose space?

The diameter of a circle is 2 * Pi * D, where D is the diameter of the circle.

So the circumference of half a circle (e.g. the letter capital D) is going to be half the perimeter of a circle plus the diameter (the solid line joining the two ends of the curve).

Pi * D + D.

Circumference of Circle = PI x diameter = 2 PI x radius
where PI = = 3.14 (multiply or divide)

circumference of a cirlce = pi*d
where d = the diameter

so pi*d/2 is the legth of the half circle.
if you want to include the base of the cirlce (the flat part, where the circle is cut in half) add the diameter to it.

so it would be:
(pi*d/2) + d

Circumference = 2 pi r

pi = 3.141

r = (diameter divided by two)
