I received a letter accompanying the check saying that I had won $48.000. It stated that if I chose for them to pay the taxes, I would receive ther remaining balance (minus 3,100 for taxes) within 3 to 5 business days by courier. I am skeptical.

I received the very same check today. I did some searching and got in contact with the owner of the Lean Horizons company. It is definitely a SCAM. The bank account that these checks are written on has been closed and there is never going to be a delivery of any money. If you deposit this into your bank account you will be charged NSF fees and if you actually withdraw any funds you will owe this to your bank. PLEASE do not cash this check. The company Household Finance, INC. is a fraudulent company with no real business to be found. Tear up the check. The owner of Lean Horizons is working with authorities to get this cleared up.

it sounds like a scam to me. a woman i work with received something similar, stating that if she deposited the check into her checking and send them the money for the taxes she would get the rest. well, she did that and ended up OWING the bank a couple grand. so beware and check with a lawyer and your bank!

Do you have an account with Household Finance? They have tons of credit cards out there, so it's possible someone may have hacked into your information and is trying to set up a scam. I would recommend that you call Household Finance's corporate office and ask them. I'm thinking that someone is trying to get your social security number (you'll need to give "Household" that information for them to remit taxes). Beware! Something doesn't sound quite right here.

It is most likely fraudulent- unless you remember entering something. Look at the back of the check for stipulations - it may say by endorsing it you have agreed to a loan. Also if it tells you to pay something to get something- it is fraud. If you are still unsure- take the letter and check to the bank- we are trained to notice fraud and they will be able to advise you on what to do next and if it is fraud.

Ahh yes, I have gotten something like that before. I think if you read closer it will say that it is for a 'home loan'. It usually comes in the form of a check - or it will look like a check.

Tear it up and throw it away - unless you want to be making payments on $48,000.
