Become a senator or governor first. Do a good job while in one of those offices. Have a clean record and make sure you stick to your politics. Don't go back and forth trying to please everyone because you'll never be able to please everyone 100%.

You better have some BIG TIME bucks in your war chest before even thinking about it! Reports so far indicate to be President it will cost you about $200 million. In NJ their Governor spent $65 million of his own money just to get elected to the Senate!! Kind of makes one wonder why someone would want to spend $65 mil to get a job that only pays about $100 thousand! And, if you're going to but into the " I want to give something back" to the community line, well then let's you and I sit down and chat about a bridge that I'd like to sell!!

Start building a network of connected people with deep pockets. Work on your charisma, because its about getting people to like you not about how smart you are. If you haven't been working towards the goal for a while you are a long ways off.
When you have the money and support then you need to start getting petitions to get on the ballot in all the states. Each state has different requirements so this is a job for a team of people.
Once you are on the ballot in as many states as you can, bend over and get ready for the press to perform a rectal examination without any lube.

I'd really hate to sound like this, but if you have to ask, you might as well not even do it. Organizations throw millions of dollars at candidates to run. If you don't even know what you need to do in order to run, you really don't stand a chance. It's sad, because I'm not saying you wouldn't make a good president, I don't know anything about you, but it's all about who you know and how much money you have to get off the ground.

Well it helps to choose the right parents and have a huge roledex with people who like to give mega bux to political campaigns. I would still say it helps to have a good brain, dispite the fact that Dictator Dumbya is the MAJOR exception to that rule. Hell he wasn't even elected, so it might help if you personally knew at least 5 of the sitting Supremes.

1st have your dad get you into Yale & then become a cheerleader, join a secret masonic fraternity that includes all the other rich WASPS in America, then have your daddy get you into Havard Business School, upon graduation try working at several different companies but fail at everyone of them, then get into politics because Daddy is in politics and it looks easy & you need a job, watch daddy while he's President, and then use his powerful name to get yourself elected after you became a born again Christian because you snorted too much Cocaine & were a alcoholic.

Well I would suggest that the first thing you ought to do is to
write a coherent sentence.
The next thing you need to do is get involved in local politics.
Then go from there.
However, why would you want that job? In case you hadn't noticed
everybody and his uncle second guesses that office. They
ridicule whoever holds that office no matter who he is.
It's a thankless job at best.
