A 1971 is old enough that it may have an access door from outside the home.

A good place to start, is with the half of the home that has the most plumbing. Where does the main water hook-up come in at? Often the water heater is located there.

Another spot, is behind the furnace. This is most often the case, when the kitchen is about the center of the home, and the furnace access door faces the short hall. The furnace would be right behind a kitchen wall, usually.

Master Bath -- look for a part of the wall with an extra raised panel, or plastic caps that may be covering screws... This is where a hot water heater is MOST often found.

Generally, the only time you will see a water heater NOT inside the home itself, is if the home has been remodeled. Then it may have been placed in a basement, for example.

Good Luck

well, they have been known to hide them in several spots,... some are behind the fake wall in a closet, some are underneath the house below where the furnace is at... go and look in your closets, the one closest to the main bath should house the water heater... it will be behind a wall that either has screws in it, or comes completely out... if you look inside one of your cabinet doors in the kitchen, some will show you where it is located...
