I received a letter accompanying the check saying that I had won $48.000. It stated that if I chose for them to pay the taxes, I would receive ther remaining balance (minus 3,100 for taxes) within 3 to 5 business days by courier. I am skeptical.

The company sends you a letter with a 4 digit claim number, and also sends you a check for a well known bank like:Wells Fargo for an amount of almost $5,000.In the letter it states that you have won $48,000 in unclaimed money and they are holding your funds. In order to get your money, you have to cash the $5,000 check that looks real,I must say.The check is for foreign taxes and they send you the rest of the $44,000 by a courier service within 3 to 5 business days.If you do not reply by a certain time frame they give your money over to the state. When I saw the check I was very tempted,It had my name and address and also the watermark on the check. But if you try and cash it,you will be arrested for fraud.Thank God I watched 3 on your side before I received this check.I would be in a world of hurt right now.PLEASE DO NOT FALL INTO THE TRAP! DO NOT CASH THE CHECK!You should not have to pay to receive winnings. If it's to good to be true.It is.

If you didn't ask for it, apply for it or approve it... Don't allow the great sound and promise of easy anything (especially money) to sway your better judgment... Companies pay to belong to the Better Business Bureau! Beware that scam too!

Check them out on the Attorney Generals website for your state under fraudulent companies or reports of fraud.

I wouldn't go anywhere near it if I were you! Bad News all over that!

Seal it back up and send it back marked "return to sender. address unknown. recipient no longer at this address."

Is there any contact information on the letter? I'd contact them as well as the Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been filed against the company. Do not send them any money or provide them with your social security info or checking accounts or credit cards.

This is 100% a fraud.

It is a version of the "Nigerian Bank" scam.

Do a search on any search engine for "Nigerian bank scam" or "Nigerian bank fraud". I provided one such consumer help website that seeks to inform people about this. This type of scam is an attempt to play on people's greed.

The simple skinny:
You have the opportunity to get (large sum of money)!
Just send us (smaller sum of money) and we will send you the (large sum of money).

Ignore it and don't give them ANY information. A real contest would NOT ask for ANY money from you before you claim the prize for any reason.
