faces or phases?
FACES of the moon i think are just the "bumps" or craters on the moon that we can see all the way from Earth, and with an imagination, you can pretend that it looks like a face.
PHASES are caused 'cause the moon only shines by reflecting the light of the sun, and it doesn't produce any light of its own. So, when the moon rotates around the earth and the earth rotates around the sun, it looks like the moon is waning or waxing because we can only see some sections of the moon that's being hit by the sun's light. It's kind of complicated to explain without a physical example, but that's the idea.

The "Man on the Moon" face is just the way that the craters happen to be arranged, and the way we humans tend to project ourselves on to everything around us.

The phases of the moon, however, are caused by the rotation of the moon around the Earth. When it is directly opposite the Earth, it's in full sunlight, and we call it a Full Moon. When it's between the Sun and the Earth, all we see is it's shadow, and we call it a New Moon.

If you are talking about the phases of the moon it is a result of the reflection of the sunlight. The moon does not produce any light of its own. Now if you are talking about faces then they are just craters and mountains on the moons surface.
