Technically you could.

Would you want to? Probably not.

The reason is that while your computer may be able to run XP it will most likely run it slower than molasses in wintertime.

XP is made for newer computers, meaning it uses more system resources than the older operating systems. Your computer may run ok on 98 but when you install XP on it, it will run MUCH slower.

A definite NO to upgrading to Vista.

Probable no to upgrading to XP. It might run, but the speed won't be anything to write home about.

With a machine that old, you'll do better to get a new one than to try to bring your old one up to XP specs.

All good answers uptop, but I have to ask, as cheap as a new dell is, why would you want to. Donate it to charity, get the tax writeoff for it and buy a new unit.

Get UBUNTU (or XUBUNTU if you have less than 256MB of RAM).
They are free, reliable and up to date operating systems. Also, you will have access to thousands of free programs (including the award winning OpenOffice).

Yes you can. But you stand the chance of losing some of your files in Word, or Excel if you don't back them up.
