to make crystals all you need is a saturated solution of any of the following substances; sugar, salt, borax, epsom salts or any other salts. these substances are called solutes, the water in which you dissolve them is the solvent. when you mix the solute into the solvent you get a solution. after a few weeks you will get the crystal on the piece of string or wire. you can then use this crystal as the "seed crystal". by this i mean, that you suspend the crystal on a string or wire into another saturated solution and have the crystal grow bigger by the end of a 2 weeks time. i am not sure about this one but it is my best bet. the optimum temp the temperature at which the crystallization actually begins.
