The oil companies are so rich and powerful that they will not let it happen anytime soon. These oil companies also control many politicians so they are not going to push it. It would cost a tremendous amount of money to change fuel choices so why should the oil companies change. The auto manufacturers would incur much cost to convert or do both. Someone independent is going to have to make it happen. Someone without oil or auto ties. Hydrogen is great but the infrastructure is not in place and would be too expensive for limited use. Eventually it will have to happen and nothing works good when forced or done quickly. Alcohol or some derivative seems a plausible application. Brazil has been using alcohol for years. Alcohol can be made cheap and pretty much by anyone. The infrastructure is already in place.

Another source of fuel will cut ties with Mid East and hopefully end much of the problems currently associated with that area because they don't have rest of the world in their grasp.

WHEN ARE PEOPLE GOING TO EDUCATE THEMSELVES WITH MORE THAN THE FIVE O'CLOCK NEWS. FIRST THE MIDDLE EAST (SAUDI ARABIA, KUWAIT, IRAQ) SEND US 24 % OF OUR OIL IN MY BOOK 24% OF ANYTHING ISN'T AS MUCH AS PEOPLE BEHAVE IT IS . BETWEEN CANADA OUR #1 OIL SUPPLIER AND MEXICO #3 AND VENEZUELA #4 AND NIGERIA #5--THESE FOUR GIVE US 67% OF OUR OIL. ALCOHOL IS JUST AS EXPENSIVE AS GAS AND HAS A VERY POOR RETURN IN GAS MILEAGE. GAS WITH 15% ALCOHOL WILL DROP YOUR GAS MILEAGE BY 20 SOME PERCENT-- SOUND VIABLE TO YOU. I WANT A ALTERNATIVE ALSO BECAUSE COMPETITION WILL KEEP PRICING COMPETITIVE.
EVERYONE SEEMS TO FORGET WHEN WE HAD CHEAP GAS THE OIL COMPANIES WERE ALMOST BANKRUPT. THERE PROFITS ARE LESS THAN WHAT OTHER INDUSTRIES MAKE 9CENTS FOR EVERY DOLLAR SPENT. OTHER INDUSTRIES ENJOY PROFITS IN THE LOW TO MIDDLE TEENS. ALL THE BIG AUTOMAKERS ARE PURSUING ALTERNATIVES BUT THEY HAVE TO OFFER SOMETHING VIABLE THEY ARE IN BUSINESS TO MAKE MONEY THEY ARE NOT A CHARITY . THIS BANTER FROM PEOPLE ABOUT GAS PRICES NEED TO STOP DRIVING ALL THESE SUB 20MPG SUVS AND PICK-UP TRKS--WE HAVE THE POWER TO LOWER OUR CONSUMPTION BY OUR CHOICE OF VEHICLES. THIS INDUSTRY IS DRIVE BY SUPPLY AND DEMAND AND AMERICAS LOVE OF SUVS AND PICK-UPS ONLY DRIVES THIS MARKET HIGHER BECAUSE WE REFUSE TO CONSERVE WHERE WE CAN.

A car that runs on water will be available once Exxon controls the fresh water supply and the oil all runs out.

Think of all the money we have wasted in Iraq trying to stabilize the oil supply that could have gone to alternate energy source research and development.

Do you think the oil companies had any say in our choice of where to spend that money?

Not until there isn't enough left, and we literally have to. It wouldn't be profitable for a company to switch over to a completely new fuel source that isn't readily available to consumers, and it would cost a lot of money to develop alternative fuel sources.
