How much you can make without filing depends on your age, dependency status, and filing status. If you are not a dependent, you are required to file a 2006 federal income tax return if your income is equal to or greater than the below amount for your filing status and age:

Single:
- under 65: $8,450
- over 65: $9,700

Head of Household
- under 65: $10,850
- over 65: $12,100

Married Filing Separate:
- $3,300

Married Filing Jointly:
- both under 65: $16,900
- one over 65: $17,900
- both over 65: $18,900

Qualifying Widow(er):
- under 65: $13,600
- over 65: $14,600

There are also some special rules for married individuals living apart at the end of the year. For dependents filing requirement or for more detailed information, check out the link below. Good luck! :-)

You know there may be a number at which you technically do not have to file tax return, but my suggestion is: If you made any money Do File!
Why? Because it is cleaner that way. The government will let you not file only if they are absolutely positive that you wouldn't owe any income tax anyway, in which case if any tax was withheld from your paychecks, you may be getting something back. If you didn't make a lot of money, you can probably file your Federal Tax on-line free. Just go to www.irs.gov and follow Free Filing link.
Under some circumstances you may be getting back even more than you thought. If your taxes are simple, filing on-line may take less time and effort than actually typing this question here...
Once you file, you sort of settled your case with IRS, if you don't file, it's open, and if they suspect something you have to deal with them and it may cost you more than filing now.
That is my suggestion. Good luck.
