Giraffa camelopardalis: the common name 'giraffe' comes from Arabic and the scientific name derives from this (the meanings given are varied, but "graceful" is the most likely). In ancient times the Greeks called the animal the camelopard, meaning roughly "camel spotted like a leopard", referring to the basic shape of the giraffe and its markings. The second part of the scientific name derives from this word.
