I think it is very cute and the story about your son and your names makes it cuter. It is a little strange, but if you like unique names, go for it. Just make sure it sounds good with your last name as well. Congrats!

Reminds me of the sort of name a fairy would have in a children's story. It's cute, sure, and pretty. But how many people do you think would seriously want to hire a woman named Petal? Sounds like a good middle name, perhaps, but I'd probably decide on something else for a first name.

I am so sorry to say this but I think that would be a terrible name. Pet is the shortened name for it and that could be really bad. I am usually open minded about this type of thing because I had an unusual name and never got teased about it. however I learned that if your name sounds like something off color or sexual you will get teased so bad.
If anything please use it as a middle name so this girl wont be harassed or called Pet.

I have a unique name so I'm all for it and think it sounds like a pretty name but two things to consider: 1) it might be too unusual and she will always have questions about it; and 2) sometimes "Petal" sounds like "Pedal" as bike pedal or the pedal on a piano. And that doesn't very pretty.

What about using it as her middle name?

My wife of 25 yrs, her name IS Petal.
49 yrs and is doing fine.
Named our daughter it, but refer to her by her middle. When she is an adult, it's up to her which name she'll use.
Only known of fictional characters named such. Both not good people. In previous answer "shopping News" & "Trespass".
I love the name.

Well, its a cute name but if you were going to use it i would put it as a middle name. I wouldn't like that to be my name. I think it may be cute for a baby or a child, but when she grows into a teen and an adult, I dont think it would sound cute anymore. Hope this helps.

Cute concept, but it is a common noun, which I think is bad for a person. Think about it. If she were to get hit by a car, bus, or aluminum baseball bat, the headline in the newspaper would be "Metal to the Petal."

It is also a homonym with peddle, which doesn't always have the best connotations.

Being unique with a first name may sometimes cause your child problems. Also remember that other children will tease your child with an extremely unique name or one that means something "they" might consider funny. Have fun with the middle name. The middle name maybe the perfect spot for that unique name you've been thinking of!

It's a cute nickname but I don't think that being the child's real name will be good. What if you doesn't like little cute names? Then you got a problem.

It's a cute name but it's also the name of a "not so nice" character in a book called "The Shipping News" which I think won a Pulitzer...just thought you should know!
