I'm doing some research for my blog and I would like to use Monarchs as an example of migration. I'm sure the migration is related to mating but I would like to get my facts straight... So! Any entomologists out there?

Well migration is not common in the insect world, but the monarch is a perfect example. The adult monarchs (Danaus plexippus) that leave from North America in the autumn will travel all the way to Mexico. Once their they aggregate in large numbers, too many to count... While here the adults will mate. This communal gathering is believed to be to facilitate mating. Once mated the adults will either die or will begin the northern trek again. Along the way the adults will deposit eggs, and amazingly, it is usually only the second or third generation form the original parents that return to their native habitat. Milkweed is not common in Mexico, so the food down there for the young is not abundant, that is why they are driven north again. Why Mexico, well it is not really known..... Apparently the conditions there are great for adult feeding and mating, so that's why they go.

I hope this helps!

Some butterflies would be content if the enviroment was good with the correct plants to breed on and if the country where they're are lacks this as well as the correct heat, they could just as well fly to Mexico.

You are correct that they migrate for mating but the climate is only a part of the reason. It's margaritas and tequila! Just like people they go down to mexico get trashed and mate.

Mexico has a warm climate that is just right for the butterflies. they go there so they don't freeze their little monarch butts off.
