Tact, in the eternal words hanging on a plaque in my uncles office is "The ability to tell someone to go to hell, and have them feel happy to be on their way."

The ability in a situation in which someone or a group of people inadvertently say or do something seen to be a social phopa, where the person or group injured or perceived to be injured are able to merely shrug it off and continue without any form of embarrassment or distress. It can also be the ability to have great poise whilst under an extremely stressful situation.

Its a word describing a graciously skillful manner in which one handles a a usually difficult or slightly delicate situation. It kind of refers to cleverness in a difficult situation.

For example, "It took a great amount of tact for William to avoid putting his foot in his mouth while defending his opinions on biased payscales"
