Witchcraft 101 would go something like this, at least as I was taught: All things in the universe are interconnected by energy, which some witches (including Wiccans) perceive as Divine in nature. This is how witchcraft works: by focussing my intent, and using sympathetic correspondances (certain herbs for courage, for example), I can create an amulet using those herbs which will stimulate courage in the person who wears it. Similarly, by using a lock of hair from a person who is ill, I can (with their permission) set energies in motion that will help them to heal.

In this sense, witchcraft is a very mechanistic worldview. The entire universe is seen as a giant interconnected machine, and by applying one's will to exert pressure one area, one creates a cascade effect that causes change in another area.

Witchcraft is not a game, or a toy. It is a serious process of setting energies in motion, some of them quite large. And if you're not careful, the backlash can be very nasty.

Say, for example, you do a spell to get $2000 to pay a bill, but do not specify "with harm to none" or any other conditions. You might end up getting that $2000 dollars -- because you slipped on some ice, broke your arm, and are getting an insurance settlement worth $2000. Each spell has to be carefully thought out and prepared, and executed with focus, or else nothing at all is going to happen.

Witchcraft is not something you learn how to do overnight. It's a process of becoming attuned to yourself and the universe around you. One of the first lessons any Wiccan is taught is: "Know thyself." This isn't easy, and often it isn't pretty, but it IS necessary.

You might want to visit the discussion forums at Beliefnet.com

where they have forums dedicated to witchcraft.

Wicca is one of the religions that practices witchcraft. A relatively objective (non-Wiccan) set of articles on what Wiccans do and believe:

Another useful article:

A good site by Wiccans:

And the US Army Chaplains Handbook excerpt on Wicca:

If you're looking to do some reading, I'd recommend "Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner" by Scott Cunningham, and "Triumph of the Moon" by Ronald Hutton. I advise you to stay away from anything by Silver Ravenwolf, for reasons outlined in the following essay:

Get 'The Grimoire for the Apprentice Wizard' by Oberon Zell Ravenheart. Best book I ever bought and the most definitive I've found on starting witchcraft/wizardry.
Other than that, take you time and don't do anything you wouldn't want done to you.

you can google witchcraft, wicca, spells, etc. But first I must ask you why you are getting into witchcraft. Witchcraft is part of a religion that should not be taken lightly. You cannot use witchcraft for selfless gain. There are several good authors, Buckland, Amber K, Silver Ravenwolf, etc. Whatever you read take with a grain of salt.

That will attract to you a very bad Karma the next life. Witchcraft is earnest punished than suicide. It is against the Holy Spirit.

I can't suggest any good websites but Hastings has a goldmine of great books on the subject. I suggest "The old girls books of spells" by Garrison. I myself have studied under another person for two years now. I know several spells and I can give you a few pointers. E-Mail me at stephanierudder@yahoo.com if you are interested.

I know it sounds cheesy and like the equivalent of sourcing Wikipedia for a term paper but honestly the tumblr witch community is so understanding and kind, and almost all of us are willing to answer any question you have. Hell, a lot of the witchy blogs are closer to electronic grimoires than blogs!
